Frequently Asked Questions About Spravato

What is Spravato?

Spravato is a new anti-depressant treatment that has shown to be effective in the management of treatment-resistant depression and depression with suicidality. This form of ketamine is administered through an intra-nasal spray. Spravato is very fast acting with many experiencing an improvement in symptoms after the first few treatments.

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is dissociative anesthetic that can be used in the treatment of depression and suicidality. When using ketamine for depression, we use small doses so that you stay awake and alert throughout the treatment. While some do experience a mild dissociative effect, this is brief and resolves by the end of each treatment.

Is Spravato (Esketamine) safe?

Spravato is incredibly safe. The most common side effects are dissociation, dizziness, mild sedation, vertigo, or headache which typically last about an hour for most. We monitor you closely at the start of your treatments to ensure you are tolerating the treatments well. Typically, these symptoms are short-lived and decrease in intensity over the treatment course.

What can I expect for the treatments?

At the start of each treatment, we will bring you back to the Spravato Treatment Room where you will be seated in a comfortable reclining chair. Water or tea will be provided and any adjustments to the room’s lighting can be made to ensure your comfort. Once you are settled, we will take your blood pressure and then guide you through administering the intranasal Esketamine spray. We encourage you to relax into the experience. After the first hour, there will be a quick check-in before taking your blood pressure a second time. As you are getting closer to the end of treatment, you will feel the sedation and dissociation effect wearing off. At the end of the 2-hour treatment time, a brief evaluation will be completed which will including taking your blood pressure a third time before you leave the office.

What is the treatment schedule?

Each Spravato treatment session includes monitored self-administration of Spravato and 2 hours of monitoring. During the first month of Spravato treatment, you will come in twice per week. During the second month, you will come in once per week. After the initial 2-month induction period, we will work to find the optimal time needed for booster sessions.
